Daisy Dukes: 6 Short Writing Prompts

Sometimes all you really need is a kick in the brain-pants to get those words flowing. So, with that poetic image in mind, here are some short, quick prompts to get you started, get you unstuck, or get you an idea.

1. Write a grocery list for your character. Make the list say something about the character, while only using items found at your typical Safeway (or your typical Faery market).

2. Make a list of everything in your character's medicine cabinet, if they have one. If they don't, make a list of everything in their Sacred Elvish Box of Healing or their Chrome Bandaid-Max 3000 or home-made bamboo boo-boo box.

3. Close your eyes and picture your character. Now turn something about them--their eyes, their hair, their skin, their teeth--lime green. Write about what would happen if they woke up one day like this. What would change? What wouldn't?

4. What would your keyboard say to you right now if it could talk?

5. Write your story's plot as a recipe. 

6. Pick a title at random from your bookshelf. Use this as the first sentence of a story.
