Get the Picture: Writing is Visual
People don't tend to think of writing as a visual art. And in its execution, maybe it isn't; the actual shapes of the words on the page don't tell the story. But if you're doing your job, those shapes should be translating to images within the reader's mind. A really good writer can make the reader see the story unfold like a movie in their mind. When you sit down to write, you should have a picture of the action, the characters, the setting, in your mind. And because writing is so visual, I find that visual prompts are often the most effective. Visual prompts tap into a different, more intuitive, less "logical" or mechanical part of the brain. So for today, I offer you a collection of pictures I find visually interesting.
A disclaimer: I don't own or have permission for any of these photos. They're just what popped up when I googled certain words or phrases.
This picture inspired the main character of my book, Four Kisses for the End of the World.
